About this workshop

Traumatized parts live in “trauma time.”  When triggered, they do not realize that they are reliving the past, keeping individuals in a flight/fight/freeze loop. By orienting parts to time and place, a person’s system can relax. Parts don’t have to be so extreme and are triggered much less dramatically and much less often.

This intervention can be crucial for stabilization in Phase 2 of EMDR therapy, especially when working with complex trauma and dissociative disorders. After taking this three-hour class, participants will immediately be able to use this effective and quick technique with all their clients.

What you will be able to do afterwards

1. Differentiate aspects the dissociative spectrum, identifying its relevance to assessment and trauma-informed treatment interventions.
2. Explain the effects of trauma on time perception and temporal awareness.
3. Describe the theoretical framework of parts-based concepts that inform this intervention.
4. Apply the “Orienting to Time and Place” intervention immediately in clinical practice.
5. Identify and utilize effective questions to support clients in orienting to the present moment.

Meet your trainer

Dorinna S. Ruh, LCSW
EMDR Certified Therapist • EMDRIA Approved Consultant • HAP/Trauma Recovery Facilitator

Dorinna is a seasoned therapist with over 34 years of experience, beginning her career in substance abuse counseling in 1989 and earning her Master’s in Social Work in 1995. Since starting her private practice in Colorado in 2000, she has specialized in treating complex trauma and dissociation in adults, using EMDR therapy as her primary approach since 2001. She is an EMDR Certified Therapist, Approved Consultant, and has facilitated EMDR trainings through HAP/Trauma Recovery for the past 7 years. A dedicated educator and consultant, Dorinna offers EMDRIA-approved trainings and is expanding her work to include advanced trainings rooted in the modalities that have most influenced her practice.

Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 3 hours of continuing education credits.
